On December 13, 2012, Adam Lanza, 20 years of age, walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, and shot and killed 26 people. These individuals included 20 children and 6 adults. The children were 6–7 years old and consisted of twelve girls and eight boys.
It was just over one week before Christmas, when kids are looking forward to Santa Claus, opening gifts, and spending time with their families, that this nightmare took place. This massacre goes down as the 2nd deadliest shooting in U.S history, according to CNN. That day was considered horrific, and as many people stated, “utter evil”. It has been reported that the individuals were shot multiples times. This carnage has even caused the President of the United States, Barack Obama, to shed tears, as he too has two young kids and can empathize with the victims’ families.
The bloodshed ended when Lanza took his own life. He was found dead in a classroom with three firearms that belonged to his mother: .223-caliber Bushmaster rifle, a Glock, and a Sig Sauer. Authorities reported that before Adam went on a shooting spree at the school, he killed his mother in their home in Newtown's Sandy Hook community.
Many people are astounded by the killings, and many are asking why and how could this have happened? Others are asking, where is God? No one seems to have the answers, though. It has been stated by relatives that Adam was a quiet person, with no criminal record or run-ins with the law.
Media pundits and psychologists have trumped up claims that Adam Lanza appears to be suffering from a personality disorder, with little evidence to support their Monday morning quarterback analysis.
There is a lot of speculation as people are searching for answers; however, one thing is for sure: Something must be done about gun control, as guns seem to be getting into the hands of the wrong people too often. December 13, 2012, is a very sad, sad day for the families who lost loved ones at the elementary school in Connecticut, and they will forever mourn their deaths. This is a wake-up call to action.
On Sunday, December 15, 2012, a vigil was held for the victims: President Barack Obama gave a heartfelt speech and reiterated that something must be done to keep kids safe.
