Guy Turcotte, 39, a former cardiologist who confessed to killing his two children—Olivier, 5, and Anne-Sophie, 3—by stabbing them 46 times in his rented home in Quebec on February 21, 2009, is apparently walking free. He was found not criminally responsible due to a mental disorder by a jury in 2011, and was placed in Montreal’s Pinel psychiatric institute until an administrative tribunal decided whether he is a threat to himself and society.
Dr. Guy Turcotte, now 40 years old, spent 46 months under psychiatric care and was released on Wednesday, February 12, 2012, with certain conditions met. According to the globalmail.org, Turcotte has told the panel at his institution that he wants to live a productive life by working and possibly marrying again.
Turcotte’s release has sparked outrage in Quebec. Dr. Isabella Gaston, his ex-wife and the mother of the children killed, is exasperated by this decision and made the statement that they are “freeing a criminal,” according to the canadapress.com. Dr. Gaston also made a statement that she is in fear for her life, as Turcotte might try to kill her also.
As stated in the huffington post, the Canadian Government is trying to implement a new law, so that a formal review will take longer for people who are found not criminally responsible and are place in psychiatric hospitals.
